As a dietitian, the one recommendation I often make is to meal plan. There is a distinct difference between meal prep and meal planning. Meal planning usually comes before meal prep, the process of planning meals for the day, week, or month, whereas meal prep is where the meals are made and stored for the next day, week, or month. I recommend planning for a week as it is more practical because meal planning can take up to 15 minutes. Do this on a Saturday or Sunday morning.
Why a meal plan?
It saves time,
It saves money and
Add variation that can be more nutritionally balanced.
Promotes more home cooked meals, which could promote weight loss, manage diabetes, and manage cholesterol levels.
It can reduce stress levels as you will avoid worrying all day about what to prepare or the rushed preparation of meals.
How to meal plan?
Check the cupboards, fridge, and freezer to see what you have. It can save money because you can include items you already have available in the meals.
Write down the meals: breakfast, lunch, and supper, and you can include your snacks.
Make a grocery list. Add the items needed for the meals not available at home.
Consider the time you have available when planning and preparing your meals.Include leftovers and frozen or non-perishable meal items as these will save time when preparing meals.
A dietitian can assist with meal planning and provide meal ideas and nutritious and budget-friendly recipes.
