The June holidays are almost upon us. As we look forward to later mornings with no school runs and getting stuck in traffic for two weeks, we face another challenge - feeding our kids during this time. The kids are home all day and constantly need meals and snacks. If your kids are anything like mine, they're always in the kitchen looking for something to eat or wanting to go out and have takeaways almost daily.

Some tips from a dietitian (who is also a mom)

For the stay-at-home moms:

• Keep it simple.

• For breakfast, make a pot of oats and make enough for a day or two. Store it in thefridge and reheat the next day.

• Make extra at supper and keep for lunch the next day.

• Sandwiches are always a great option - kids can make these themselves.

• Have healthy snacks available, like fruit, dates, nuts, and popcorn.

• Portion snacks.

• When going out, take healthy snacks to have in the car.

• If you know that one of the meals will be a takeaway meal, ensure the other two meals are healthier.

• Plan fun activities in the kitchen and cook and bake with your kids.

For the working moms:

• Keep it simple.

• Make ready-to-eat, high-fiber breakfasts available.

• Meal plan for supper.

• If your kids are at a holiday club and you need to send meals, sandwiches are a good option or leftover meals.

• Make healthy snacks like fruit, dates, nuts, and popcorn available for their holiday clubs.

• Bake healthy snacks that your kids can have at the holiday club at the beginning of the week.

Most kids eat when they are bored. When this happens, distract them with activities that don't include food.
