Being a working mama can be very stressful at times.
Things can become chaotic quickly. Juggling work meetings, planning the kids’ outfits for a school function, and meal planning in between are enough to push anyone to the edge.
In light of this, I would like to discuss mental health triggers.
Mental health triggers are things that push us to our edge. It can be set off by a specific experience or event, or as in the case of a working mama by a toddler's tantrum at a shopping mall. Mental health triggers are different for everyone, given that our life experiences are unique. In hindsight, it is often difficult to discern what triggers you than in the present.
Being caught up in the busyness often leaves little or no time for reflection.
We can become so caught up in the moment, respond, and then carry on without sparing a thought. At this point, it can become quite damaging, not only for ourselves but also for those around us. Understanding your mental health triggers is an important discovery as it helps you explore the incident linked to the trigger and helps you become mindful of how you respond when it comes up in the future.
When you are triggered, it is as if your mind and body go into "fight or flight” mode.
However, it is crucial to acknowledge the emotion you are experiencing in that moment and then learn the necessary skills to self-regulate. The reality is that some triggers are quicker to identify and diffuse than others (and this is where I strongly recommend seeking professional help!).
Our kids learn self-regulation from us through role modelling. As a mom, it can be hard to experience a triggering incident and respond appropriately at the time.
We are only human.
The important thing is to give yourself grace and actively take steps to learn how to identify and work through your triggers in a healthy manner. So, the next time you are triggered, pause, take a deep breath, and then respond.
I am Cindy Christian, a mom to a beautiful 3-year-old girl, wife, mental health professional (HPCSA: Registered Counsellor and Research Psychologist), and PhD candidate. I've spent the last decade working in public and private higher education in South Africa and private counselling practice. I am passionate about community mental health, psychology education, research, and counselling. I enjoy accompanying people on their journeys through difficult obstacles to regain mental wellness. As a mom, wife, and working professional, I constantly strive to find balance in everything I do (which is no easy task!). Being mindful and making conscious decisions to review habits that serve me and those that don't help me achieve my goals. I am proud to be a working mama!
