Seven Steps to Healthy, Happy Skin!
Embarking on a skincare journey can be exciting and overwhelming, especially with the mass of products available promising transformative results. As to the Woman and Home Magazine survey, which Savanna Douglas reported, the typical South African woman allocates an annual budget of R5,468 solely for cosmetics.
One common question frequently asked: "What comes first in your skincare routine?" Establishing the correct order of application is crucial to maximising the efficacy of your products and ensuring your skin receives the nourishment it deserves. Let's break down the essentials of a basic skincare routine and the correct steps to follow:
1. Cleansing:
The foundation of any skincare routine begins with cleansing. Cleansing removes dirt, oil, impurities, and residual makeup, prepping the skin for better product absorption. Opt for a gentle cleanser suited to your skin type, whether it's gel, cream, or foam—to effectively cleanse without stripping away essential oils.
2. Toning:
Once your skin is clean, toning helps balance its pH Levels and refine pores. Toners also prepare the skin to absorb active ingredients from serums and moisturizers more effectively. Look for alcohol-free toners infused with soothing ingredients like witch hazel or rose water to hydrate and refresh your skin.
3. Treatment Products:
After cleansing and toning, it's time to address specific skin concerns with treatment products. This step may include serums, essences, or spot treatments formulated to target issues such as acne, hyperpigmentation, or fine lines. Apply these products sparingly and allow them to fully absorb before proceeding to the next step.
4. Sheet Masks:
Sheet masks are a luxurious addition to any skincare routine, delivering concentrated doses of active ingredients to nourish and revitalize the skin. Incorporate sheet masks after cleansing and toning, allowing them to infuse your skin with hydration, antioxidants, or other beneficial ingredients. Leave the mask on for the recommended time, then gently massage any excess serum into your skin.
5. Eye Cream:
The delicate skin around the eyes requires special attention. Eye creams' purpose is to hydrate, brighten, and minimize the appearance of fine lines and dark circles. Gently pat a pea-sized amount of eye cream around the orbital bone using your ring finger to avoid tugging or pulling on the delicate skin.
6. Moisturizer:
Hydration is essential to maintaining healthy, supple skin. Moisturizers lock in moisture and create a protective barrier against environmental stressors. Choose a moisturizer tailored to your skin type, whether it's lightweight for oily or combination skin or rich and creamy for dry skin—to replenish moisture levels and promote a smooth, radiant complexion.
7. Sunscreen:
The final—and arguably most important—step in your daytime skincare routine is sunscreen. Sunscreen shields the skin from harmful UV rays, preventing sunburn, premature aging, and skin cancer. Opt for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and apply it generously to all exposed areas of the skin, including the face, neck, and hands.
Nighttime Additions:
In the evening, your skincare routine may include additional steps such as double cleansing to remove makeup and sunscreen, followed by treatments like retinoids or chemical exfoliants to promote cell turnover and rejuvenate the skin overnight. Finish with nourishing night cream or a sleeping mask to replenish moisture and support skin repair while you sleep.
In conclusion, establishing a consistent skincare routine and understanding the correct order of application is essential for achieving healthy, radiant skin. By following the steps outlined above—from cleansing to sunscreen—you can effectively address your skin's needs and embark on a journey towards a glowing complexion that radiates confidence and vitality.
PRO TIP: According to Mrs. Nqobile Nhlapo, CEO and Founder of Khanyi Cosmetics, if you're starting with active ingredients, introduce them gradually into your skincare routine. Start using them perhaps three times a week, and slowly increase usage as your skin adapts.
